A beginner's guide to alcohol-free spirits: gin, whisky and rum alternatives
Alcohol-free spirits are the hardest category in the whole alcohol-free world to get right, and the one most likely to disappoint a first-timer - mostly because people go in expecting an exact swap, and that's the wrong expectation to bring.
Set the right expectation first
A lot of a spirit's character - the burn, the weight, the way it sits in your chest - comes directly from the alcohol itself, not just the botanicals or grain around it. There is no way to fully replicate that without the alcohol, and any alcohol-free spirit that tries too hard to feels like a slightly hollow copy. The better ones stop trying to imitate the alcoholic version exactly and instead build something genuinely good on its own terms - usually leaning harder into botanicals, spice or complexity to fill the gap.
Gin alternatives
This is the most mature part of the category by some distance - there are now dozens of genuinely well-made alcohol-free "gins," usually built around juniper, citrus and botanicals with a proper distillation process behind them rather than just flavoured water. It's the easiest entry point if you're new to the category.
Whisky alternatives
Considerably harder to get right. Whisky's character comes heavily from cask ageing and the alcohol itself, and alcohol-free versions vary from genuinely impressive to a disappointing caramel-coloured syrup. Go in with lower expectations than you would for gin, and check reviews before you spend the money on a full bottle.
Rum alternatives
A mixed bag, but the sweeter, spiced style of rum translates better to an alcohol-free format than a clean, sharp spirit does - the sugar and spice notes do a lot of the work that alcohol would otherwise provide.
Don't judge the whole category on one bad bottle
Because quality swings so much between brands here more than any other category, one disappointing bottle isn't a fair verdict on alcohol-free spirits as a whole. Check real reviews before you buy, tagged by people with your specific reason for drinking alcohol-free - not just a generic star rating.
