Alcohol-free drinks for pregnancy, driving and cutting down - it's not one list
Search "best alcohol-free drinks" and you'll get one generic list, as if everyone reaching for a 0.0% can wants the same thing from it. They don't - and treating it like one audience is exactly the problem we built HonestAF around.
If you're pregnant
The honest answer is that official guidance doesn't perfectly cover trace-alcohol drinks specifically - we've written the full, straight version of this in our pregnancy Q&A rather than glossing over it here. What tends to matter most in practice is choosing a genuine 0.0% over a 0.5% "de-alcoholised" product if you want to be as cautious as possible, and picking something that actually tastes good enough that it doesn't feel like a chore. One practical tip: for a wine to be certified halal, it generally needs to contain 0% alcohol - including trace amounts, not just under the 0.05% "alcohol-free" threshold. If you want the extra reassurance of knowing there's genuinely nothing in the glass, a halal-certified wine can give you that - even though a 0.5% "de-alcoholised" drink already contains less alcohol than a ripened banana.
If you're driving
A true alcohol-free drink (0.05% ABV or below) isn't a realistic concern for the UK drink-drive limit even after several - see the specifics here. What actually matters more for drivers is often just finding something that doesn't feel like the consolation option while everyone else is drinking - which is a taste and experience question, not a safety one.
If you're cutting down, not quitting
This is a different job entirely: you're probably looking for something close to the real thing, not a totally distinct soft drink. Reviews from people doing the same thing - moderating rather than abstaining - tend to be far more useful here than reviews from people who've never touched the alcoholic version and have nothing to compare it to.
If you're in recovery
This is the one situation where the product itself matters less than the personal call around it - trace alcohol and the ritual of a beer-shaped drink affect people very differently. We've written more on that in our Q&A on recovery, and it's genuinely not our place to tell you which side of that line is right for you.
This is exactly why HonestAF tags every review by who wrote it. A five-star review from someone with completely different needs to yours isn't actually five stars for you - here's more on why we built it that way.
